I have taken no end of grief for not mentioning a triathlon from two years ago when Libby won her age group. What can I say? "Code your own website," didn't really seem to cut it so I am attempting to atone. Setting the stage: you may recall Libby fractured her femur in April 2005. We had the good fortune of attending the Sheryl Crow/Dave Matthews concert in the 11th row at Fenway Park the night before. I got a little carried away by the atmosphere of celebration, and who can argue with $7.50 beverages!? I thought gameday prices were bad. Anyway, late night. One of us imbibed. One of us hadn't done a triathlon in more than a year.
However, I've been training pretty consistently and have all the gear you could need and then some. Libby hadn't swam since her last race and rode her bike (without clip-on pedals) maybe five times. When I put my skintight wetsuit half on to delay overheating, the severe constriction of bloodflow in my lower half caused the slight throbbing in my head increase rather acutely. Can you guess where this is going?
Probably not. How could you possibly guess that she'd get 2nd in her age group and finish a mere 21 seconds behind me!?
(Please don't) Notice her run time! Amazing. It was the Holliston Triathlon for future reference. She got third the last time she did it...which I also didn't mention. All I can say is this is the first time in two years a Saum girl didn't beat me in the race.... It's strange to finally realize that I hope my kids have her gift of endurance rather than mine.
A couple other fun, random photos.
