So. Nearly four months since the last post. What have I been doing
Libby and I have been talking for a couple years about moving west to be closer to our families. Libby spotted an amazing house for sale in Toledo nearly two years ago. The seeds of a dream...or was it a nightmare?
We/she sort of watched it over the last eighteen months as its list price came down slowly but surely. With a recent eye towards real estate, I started poking around, too, fascinated by how ridiculous housing prices are here in the Boston area. Libby's parents then saw that this house was going up for private auction! It was a really nice house so I figured it would sell for something near a reasonable asking price.
I did some more research on the area and estimated what I thought was a reasonable list price. I took 66% of that number and threw it out there as what I thought would make a good value purchase and an impossible auction win. Somewhat on a whim, Libby's dad represented us at the auction. I was mostly interested in the process and learning about how auctions worked. Well, I got to learn ALL about the process. Our bid won the auction! Uh oh. Now what?
Terms of the auction included a hefty down payment and required closing within thirty days with both Christmas and New Year's holidays in that period! Since we basically HAD to buy the house, we started thinking about how to make moving to Ohio work for us. We got very excited about the possibilities.
In the interest of time, I'll cut to the chase. While there were many positives about moving, it seemed that the negatives were too tough to overcome immediately. We exhibited some cart-before-the-horse behavior, and we decided that we should make the move when we're ready rather than when we're obligated. We're not moving to Ohio just yet.
I'm reminded from this that no decision is really final, and the illusion of control is always enticing. Who knows what the next ninety days will bring? I don't, but I'll keep you posted. If you know anyone who wants to buy a nice house in Ottawa Hills, OH, please let me know...soon.
The pictures here are not related to the house, but need to go up. If you want to look at the house, go here. Enjoy.
